What a UPS actually buys you

A small uninterruptible power supply is not there to keep the whole office running. Its job is to make a power interruption uneventful.

Measure the actual load

Modems, routers, switches, and storage boxes often draw much less than their adapters suggest. Measure the combined load at the wall, then look at the manufacturer's runtime curve for that load. The headline volt-amp rating alone tells you very little.

Decide what the minutes are for

For a network-only setup, ten or twenty minutes may bridge the short outages you see most often. For a computer or storage server, the target may simply be two calm minutes: notice the outage, stop writes, and shut down. Automatic shutdown over USB is worth testing before you need it.

Protect the data path, not every socket

If the internet connection matters during an outage, include the provider's optical terminal or modem as well as your router. A powered laptop connected to a dead upstream network is only a partial success.

Batteries age. Put a recurring reminder to run the self-test and review the replacement date. A UPS that has never been unplugged during a drill is an assumption, not a verified safeguard.
